Reiki attunement is a combination of ritual and symbols given to students during Reiki study. The purpose of the Reiki attunement is to tune the receiver into Reiki energy, similar to tuning a radio. Once attuned, the ability to use Reiki remains for life. Most Reiki schools (such as USUI) have 3 Reiki levels: 1, 2 & 3. Each level has its Reiki attunement. To learn more about Reiki, read Essential Reiki.
Reiki level 1 is the basic level and is open for anyone to study. Levels 2 & 3 may be studied if the student has passed the proceeding levels. For instance, Reiki level 3 is the master level, and the student must already have studied 1 & 2.
The Reiki Attunement
It is important to note that only qualified Reiki masters teach Reiki and perform Reiki attunements. Level 3 introduces a fourth and very powerful symbol/mantra. Most Reiki schools prefer to keep their Reiki attunements secret. The students are asked to close their eyes during the attunement – partly so not to show the symbols, but also because having eyes closed engenders a meditative state.
